Earthquakes are one of the types of natural disasters that are being feared by humans. They can be the cause of huge property losses, economic crisis, loss of many lives, and many more. Because of these reasons, it is therefore, imperative to have knowledge on the different precautionary measures that can extremely help us upon an occurrence of an earthquake.

These precautionary measures may not actually help to prevent an earthquake however, they can help us survive whenever this calamity happens. Here are the things you should do before, during and after an earthquake.

It is important to know the different actions that you have to do, the safe places you have to go such as under strong tables or desks, and the places you have to avoid like heavy furniture, hanging objects and windows.
Always have a stock of emergency supplies such as medical kits, flashlights, battery operated radios, food and water, and blankets.
You should know where the switches of your water, electricity and gas are located and make sure that you also know how to turn them off.

If you are indoors during an earthquake, look for a safe location like under a strong table or along an interior wall. The main reason of doing these is to secure your self from objects that might fall. You should never go near windows or other places that has heavy furniture and large mirrors.
If an earthquake occurs while you are cooking, turn off the stove as fast as you could and find a safe place to take cover.
If you are outdoors during an earthquake, look for an open area. Never go near buildings and other places where huge objects may fall and hit you. Also avoid going near trees and power lines.
If you are in a moving vehicle, slow down and carefully park the car at a safe place. Stay inside.
After an earthquake, always check for any injuries. If there are, attend to it as fast as you could.
Check for any damages. If the place you are in is totally damaged, get out quickly and avoid dangerous spots.
If the power is out, make sure to unplug all your electrical appliances to avoid any accidents when the power is turned back on.

Always stay in the look out for after shocks, these actually happen a few moments after an earthquake and could still cause damage.

Earthquakes can be extremely dangerous because of its multiple threats however, having knowledge upon the safety measures will help you handle such situations. Having an
insurance can help upon lessening the impact of your property loss. Another tip is, always stay alert. Mental alertness plays a very important role upon handling these situations so stay calm and don't panic.
